Why it matters

Where you give is as important as how much you give

Each year, people around the world donate hundreds of billions of dollars to charitable causes. But research consistently shows that the difference in impact between the most and least effective organisations working on the same problem can be a factor of 100 or more.

A donation to a highly effective global health charity can provide full malaria prevention for a child at risk for under $5. The same amount given to a less efficient organisation in the same cause area might achieve a fraction of that. The generosity is identical. The outcome is not.

GiveWise brings together the research of three leading charity evaluators so you don't have to become an expert to give like one.

How the scores work

One number, three trusted sources

0–100 Composite score range
3 Independent evaluators combined
8 Cause areas covered

Our composite score combines ratings from GiveWell, Charity Navigator, and CharityWatch — each with its own methodology and focus — into a single transparent number. An organisation scoring 85+ has earned strong marks across multiple independent frameworks.

No charity pays to appear here. No ranking is ever influenced by donations or sponsorships. Every score is derived directly from published evaluator data.

Data sources & methodology: Ratings and financial data sourced from GiveWell (Sep 2025), Charity Navigator, CharityWatch, 2025 charity aggregators, and individual charity annual reports. Program spending percentages are approximate figures drawn from the most recent available 990 filings and charity self-reporting. Overall scores are our editorial aggregation and not official ratings. Always verify directly with the organization before donating. This page was last compiled in March 2026.

How We Score

Each charity is evaluated across four dimensions: program spending ratio, financial transparency, measurable impact evidence, and governance quality. Scores are aggregated from GiveWell, Charity Navigator, and CharityWatch data.

What "% to Programs" Means

This shows how many cents of every donated dollar go directly to the charity's mission — not to admin overhead or fundraising costs. Top performers typically exceed 85%. We display the full breakdown visually for each charity.

Transparency Rating

Five dots represent how openly a charity discloses its operations, financials, and impact methodology. Full disclosure includes audited accounts, public IRS Form 990s, board governance policies, and program outcome reporting.
